FriendlyCare Foundation, Inc. joins the Department of Health Training of Learning and Development Managers for Mental Health GAP Action Programme, by introducing Mindfulness-Based Interventions (MBI) for mental health and wellness of Filipino families.

The week-long training was attended by Learning and Development Managers and Training Officers from DOH Regional Offices led and hosted by Frances Prescilla Cuevas, Chief Health Program Officer of DOH, Disease Prevention and Control Bureau. Plenary speakers during the training were: Dr. Dinah Nadera, Psychiatrist and consultant for mental health and psychosocial support of World Health Organization in the Philippines; Dr. Florante Trinidad, WHO-National Professional Officer; Dr. Leonor Cabral-Lim, UP Professor of Neurology and Officer of the Philippine League Against Epilepsy; and Dra. Ana Javelosa, who talked about Dementia.

FriendlyCare mindfulness core team introduced mindfulness-based programs in the plenary as a psychosocial intervention and a life skill and discipline that helps build focus attention, emotional regulation, self-awareness and resiliency. The team was led by its President Teresita Panganiban; Rosalie Operaña, Marketing and Donor Development Manager; Dr. Alejandro Legarda, Quality Management Officer; and Iris Trinidad, Mindfulness lead facilitator.

FriendlyCare presented the historical context of mindfulness and the supporting science and research-based evidences that brought mindfulness to the mainstream channels in US, Canada and UK. In between the plenary sessions, FriendlyCare also guided the participants with a taste of mindfulness practices including awareness of breath, mindful eating, breath and stretch exercise and 3-minute breathing space.

The learning objective of the DOH-initiated training is to equip the participants with the mhGAP framework, mhGAP Intervention Guide (mhGAP-IG) and the mhGAP training design and teaching tools for the roll out of the mhGAP Action Program to respective DOH regions.
